New guide to health and safety law published by LRD
Health and safety at work is one of the key issues for trade unions, so reps need to be fully aware of current legislation and advice. LRD's latest booklet, Health and Safety Law - a trade unionists' guide provides a fully updated and comprehensive outline of health and safety legislation.

Recent significant changes in health and safety law, including the new Working Time Regulations, the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, gas safety regulations, fire precautions legislation and legal protection for workers who raise issues of serious concerns, including safety concerns, about their workplace are all included in the booklet. It also covers areas of forthcoming change, such as the proposals for a ban on white asbestos.

The booklet outlines the framework of health and safety law and sets out the law on safety representatives and safety committees. There are also sections on the legislation concerning the workplace and working environment; hazardous substances, work equipment, physical hazards; hours of work and accidents. And there is a section dealing with social hazards, where there is no specific health and safety legislation, which looks at trade union and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) advice on the most appropriate legislation that can be used.
