New LRD guide to European works councils
The Labour Research Department (LRD) is today bringing out a new guide to European works councils aimed at trade unionists and employee representatives.

A European works council brings together employee representatives in a multinational company from across Europe, to inform and consult them on the group's performance and prospects. Works councils can help trade unionists to respond to the decisions that employers increasingly take on a European and global basis and to compare employees' wages, terms and conditions across the company's operations.

Although European works councils have been operating in the UK for several years, it is only since January, when new UK regulations came into force, that the UK has been fully covered by the European Union directive on works councils. The UK regulations mean that more UK companies now fall within the remit of the directive and UK representatives have gained new rights.

LRD's latest booklet will be useful for trade unionists and employee reps in companies establishing works councils for the first time; as well as those in companies where they already exist but are due for renegotiation or are affected by company mergers. It sets out the UK regulations in detail and examines their relationship to the European directive on European works councils. It also provides examples of good practice from existing works council agreements and examines how trade unionists can ensure that works councils operate to the benefit of employees.
